ISSUE 199 Q & A - WHICH PATTERNS TEACH WHAT FINISHING TECHNIQUES

THE Q & A SERIES

Which patterns teach what finishing techniqueS?

Hello! I am hoping that someone can help me with choosing a pattern or two from In the Folds. I am a fairly novice sewist with a basic sewing machine and I’m finding myself very disappointed with my finished piece--mostly because the insides are a mess! I was directed to your Flynn Jacket pattern to teach me how to bias finish but I would love to know what skills your different patterns teach so that I can choose a pattern that I will wear when completed. Bias tape and Hong Kong finishes are very appealing to me as well as French seams and flat felled seams. Can you please tell me which patterns can guide me in these different new skills?

Thank you.

Amalia

Hi Amalia,

We love this question because it gets to the heart of what sewing with intention is all about. It’s not just about making clothes you’ll wear, but building skills you’ll use again and again. Sounds like you’re ready to focus on beautiful finishes and garments that look as good on the inside as they do on the outside.

Patterns that include French Seams

French seams are a great option when you don’t have an overlocker / serger. A number of our patterns include French seams in the instructions, and then once you have mastered them, you should be able to use them on many other patterns.

Patterns that include french seams are:

patterns that include FLAT FELLED SEAMS

Flat felled seams are another good option when you don’t have an overlocker.

Patterns in our range that include flat felled seams:

patterns that include BOUND SEAMS

As you mentioned, bias bound seams and Hong Kong binding are a great option too. Some patterns that feature these finishes are:

The Hove tote is a bit of a play on bias bound seams - they are on the outside which is fun!

The other pattern I will mention is our Fairbank hat. As it’s fully lined, you don’t need an overlocker.

Once you learn how to sew these finishes by following a pattern then you should feel confident to apply these finishes to other patterns. For example, our Collins top pattern works well with French seams, although the instructions don't include details about how to do this.

Happy sewing,

Emily
